Evaluate 'Edpuzzle' using Hubbard's/Bower's criteria
Profile of the target students
Age: 17~18
grade level: middle school students (tenth)
proficiency level: B1 (Intermediate), Students who can communicate in situations, and use simple language to communicate feelings, opinions, plans, and experiences, yet not fluent.
Goals/Objective of the course
1. To practice listening and understanding the lecture
2. To practice writing about their feelings or opinions on the lecture in English
An example of teaching English course using 'Edpuzzle'

Teachers can make a video and insert some questions in between the scenes. I made the above questions using a ted video. I want to make students practice listening, thinking critically, and writing about a certain topic.
With that video, students can practice listening comprehension which is slightly challenging since the speaker is native, and writing about their feelings or thoughts about a certain topic in English. (If students can't understand the speaking, they can turn on Korean or English subtitle after they watch the video without the subtitle.)
Hubbard's 6 criteria for Selecting a Piece of Software
1. Technical Preview
- Have you got the appropriate equipment?
-> If students have a computer or mobile device, they can use 'Edpuzzle'.
2. Operation
Consider
A. Timing (Is there a time limit on how long students have to give responses, or how long they see information?)
-> There is no time limit on giving responses and students can pause or skip the video
(if a teacher doesn't turn on 'prevent skipping' set) without time limit and watch it again if they want to.
B, Control (Do students have freedom to move around the program?)
-> It depends on how to use 'Edpuzzle'. There is a limit for students to move around the program on the occasion where students have to answer the questions or write comments on the given video. In such a situation, they are asked to stick to the given video rather than browse the website. However, if the teacher lets students make their own video and questions using 'Edpuzzle' I guess students get the freedom to move around the program.
C. User input (Does the student click, or speak, or type a word, or more than a word?)
-> With 'Edpuzzle' teachers can make multiple choices, or open-ended questions, but speaking program isn't available.
D. Feedback ( Does the program just say if something is correct, or does it provide explanations, prompts and help?)
-> Teachers can give explanations for each answer. They can decide whether to write the explanations or not when you make the questions.
3. Teacher fit - Does it fit my own approach?
-> With 'edpuzzle' teachers can make students answer the questions, or let them make their own video, so I guess 'Edpuzzle' can cover almost all language teaching approaches if teachers can utilize the website properly.
I believe that many of Edpuzzle's functions are useful to use in the above activity, however, I think that it is hard to make communicative class which I prefer when teach.
4. Learner fit - Do the software suit your students’ needs, and those of syllabus?
-> Yes, for the objectives of the above course I believe that it will suit the target students' needs.
5. Implementation - Could you integrate the software easily into the course?
-> Yes, especially for the task-based and assessment the website could be very easily integrated.
6. Appropriateness - If the software were you, would you like to teach in such way?
-> No, 'Edpuzzle' is effective and easy to give information and test students, however I found out that it is hard to make communicative class using the website.
Reflection
It was really hard to evaluate the website.I didn't know that there are so many things to consider when teaching with technology. From this assignment, I realized that choosing and applying a website or application which is appropriate to target learners and objectives of the course is really critical.
To be honest, I used to think that teaching with multimedia would be much easier than without multimedia. But from Technology Enhanced Language Teaching class, every time I do my assignment I truly realize that it is not easier.
